Pause, retry and see run history
Pause or resume a workflow, read its runs and retry failed actions.
Last updated · Facts checked
Every workflow has its own page with what it does, its settings and a list of every run. From there, owners and admins can pause or resume it, and retry anything that failed.
Who can do what
Everyone on the team can see workflows and their runs. Only owners and admins can pause, resume, edit, delete or retry them.
Pause or resume a workflow
-
Open the workflow
Select Workflows in the sidebar, then the workflow's name or View.
-
Pause it
Select Pause. It keeps its settings and history but doesn't run. Requests it already created stay as they are.
-
Resume it
Select Resume. It runs again from its next scheduled time.
You can also pause, resume, edit or delete a workflow from the ⋯ menu on the Workflows page.
Pausing never catches up. Runs that would have happened while a workflow was paused are skipped for good. If you resume a monthly workflow on 10 November, the next run is 1 December, and October's requests are never created. To collect a missed period, create those requests yourself.
If a recurring workflow emails clients automatically and you haven't confirmed that yet, Resume asks first. Select Resume and send automatically to agree. Nothing is sent straight away: the first requests go out at the next scheduled run.
If GarnerDocs was down
If scheduled runs were missed because GarnerDocs wasn't running, only the latest missed run happens when it's back, and the next run is the next scheduled date after that. For example, if a monthly workflow missed its runs on 1 September, 1 October and 1 November, only the 1 November run happens, for October's period. Clients never get a backlog of requests at once, and a client never gets two requests for the same period.
See a workflow's runs
Recent runs lists each run with when it started, what triggered it, its status, how many clients or actions it handled, and how long it took. A run is Completed, Partially completed (some actions failed), Failed, Skipped (nothing to do), or still Pending or Running.
Select Details to open a run. It shows counts for Eligible, Done, Skipped and Failed, then each client or person with what happened and why, for example "Already notified by GarnerDocs." or "The client is archived." Select View request to open a request the run created.
Retry failed actions
When a run is Partially completed or Failed, fix the cause first. The message tells you what to do, for example add an email address to the client, choose another template, or confirm your retention period. Then select Retry failed on the run, or Retry failed actions in its details.
Only the failed actions run again. Requests already created, emails already sent and skipped clients are left alone.
Good to know
- The Failed Runs count on the Workflows page covers the last 30 days.
- Deleting a workflow stops it straight away. Requests it already created stay as they are, and so does their history.
