How to upload your documents

Open your link, upload each document and see what the labels mean.

Last updated · Facts checked

The business that sent you the link uses GarnerDocs to collect documents. Open the link in their email, then upload a file for each document on the list and type any short answers they ask for. You don't need an account or a password.

Steps

  1. Open your link

Select Upload documents in the email.

  2. Find a document

Scroll to Documents we need from you.

  3. Choose your files

Tap Choose files to upload and pick the files on your phone or computer. You can choose more than one.

  4. Wait for the upload to finish

A bar shows each file's progress. When it's done, the document says Under review.

All your requests in one place

Your link opens Your documents, a page listing every open request from that business, with what's still to do on each. Select a request to open its list. All your requests takes you back to the page.

  • With only one request, the link opens it straight away.
  • New requests from the same business show up on this page, so it's the only link you need to keep.
  • Finished requests stay under Completed for 90 days.

Scan paper documents with your phone

On a phone or tablet, tap Scan with your camera under the upload box. Each document becomes one PDF, however many pages it has.

  1. Take a photo

Lay the page flat in good light and take the photo.

  2. Drag the corners

Move the four dots to the corners of the page. Tap Rotate if it's on its side, and turn on Make it clearer for black-and-white text.

  3. Add the other pages

Tap Use this page, then Add page for each one. Tap a page to adjust it, or the bin to remove it.

  4. Upload

Tap Upload. The pages are sent as one PDF named after the document.

What the labels mean

  • Not uploaded: still needed.
  • Under review: received and being checked.
  • Needs replacement: they need a different file. You were asked for a different file
  • Approved: "Received and approved".
  • Not needed: you said you don't have it, and they agreed.
  • Still needed: you said you don't have it, but they still need it. Their note says why.

When everything is approved, the page says "All documents received. You're all set!" and you get an email saying so.

Short answers

Some items ask you to type a short answer instead of uploading a file, for example a date of birth. The hint under the box says what they need.

  • Type your answer in the box and tap Save answer. An answer is one line, up to 500 characters.
  • Your saved answer shows with an Edit link. Editing it while it's under review replaces the answer.
  • Once it's approved, it can't be changed.
  • If they need a new answer, the item says Needs a new answer and shows their note. Type your answer again and save it.

The labels for answers are Not answered, Under review, Approved and Needs a new answer.

If you don't have a document

Tell them instead of leaving it blank. Reminders stop asking for it while they decide.

  1. Find the document

It's marked Not uploaded or Needs replacement.

  2. Tap I don't have this

The link is under the upload box.

  3. Say why

For example, "I closed that account in March." Then tap Send.

What happens next:

  • The document says Under review, with your reason under it.
  • If they agree, it changes to Not needed and counts as done.
  • If they still need it, it says Still needed, with a note on where to get it. You'll usually get an email too.
  • Found it after all? Tap Found it after all? Upload it and upload it as usual.

This works for short answers too.

Files from your firm

Sometimes the business sends you files too, such as a finished report or a letter to sign. They appear in a section called From followed by the business's name, above the list of documents.

  • Tap the download button next to a file to save it. You don't need an account.
  • The files stay on the page after everything is approved, for as long as your link works.
  • If you're told files are waiting but don't see them, ask the business that sent you the link. They may have removed a file, or the link may have expired.

Good to know

  • Some businesses protect your link with a 6-digit PIN, which they give you separately, for example by phone or text. It's never in the email. If you're asked for a PIN you don't have, or the page says "Too many attempts", ask the business that sent you the link. My link doesn't work
  • What you upload is saved, so you can come back later with the same link.
  • Each box lists the file types it takes and the size limit, for example "PDF, JPG, PNG, ZIP · Up to 25 MB per file". A bigger file shows "This file is larger than 25 MB."
  • Uploaded the wrong file? Tap the × next to it to remove it. This works on the same phone or computer, before they've checked it.
  • Reminder emails only list what's still missing.
