Requests
Ask questions that change the checklist
Leave documents off a client's checklist unless their answer calls for them.
Last updated · Facts checked
Ask your client a yes-or-no or choice question, such as "Did you move house in the last 3 years?". Their answer decides which documents they're asked for, so nobody gets a checklist full of things that don't apply to them.
Questions only show or hide documents. They aren't a form builder: an answer can't lead to more questions, and there are no free-text or table questions. To ask for a fact in your client's own words, use a short answer.
Steps
-
Open the checklist
Questions work in templates, in New request and in Edit checklist on a request. They sit in the Questions card under the checklist.
-
Add a question
Select Add question and type it. Choose Yes or no, or Choice and add between 2 and 10 choices.
-
Link a document to it
Edit the document that depends on the answer. Under Show this document, choose the question, then tick the answers that should add it, for example Yes.
-
Save
Save the template or request as usual.
What your client sees
Your client sees the questions above their documents, under A few questions first. Selecting an answer saves it straight away, and the documents it adds appear in the list.
- A document linked to a question stays off the checklist until your client gives one of its answers.
- Your client can change an answer while the request is open.
- Once your client has uploaded something for a document, it stays on the checklist whatever they answer.
On the request page
The Client's answers card shows each answer, when it was given, and the documents it asks for or leaves off. A document that isn't on the checklist doesn't count towards progress, and reminders don't ask for it.
How unanswered questions count
- Reminders keep going while a question is unanswered, and list it as "Your answer to …".
- A request can't complete until every question is answered.
- If your client's last answer leaves only approved documents, the request completes, just as it would after your last approval.
Good to know
- Every checklist needs at least one document that doesn't depend on a question.
- A request has up to 20 questions.
- Rewording a question or a choice keeps your client's answer. Removing the choice they picked clears it, so they're asked again.
- Removing a question puts the documents that depended on it back on the checklist for everyone.
- The activity feed records that your client answered, but not their answer.
